ethtool -m fallisce sulla NIC FS.com XXV710: «Module EEPROM memory read not supported» e NVM non aggiornabile
Su Ubuntu 18.04 (kernel 5.4.0, ethtool 5.3, i40e 2.8.20-k) l'autore ha usato NIC 25G basate su XXV710 comprate da FS.com (part FS XXV710AM2-F2, chipset Intel XXV710). Il link e il traffico a velocità nominale senza errori funzionavano, ma leggere i dati DMI di un transceiver con sudo ethtool -m enp4s0f0 falliva con «Cannot get module EEPROM information: Invalid argument», e dmesg registrava «i40e 0000:04:00.0 enp4s0f0: Module EEPROM memory read not supported. Please update the NVM image.» Far girare nvmupdate64e di Intel (NVMUpdate 1.34.17.7) aggiornava un X710 Intel genuino (DevId 1572) a 7.16(7.10), ma elencava l'XXV710 (DevId 158B) a NVM 5.81(5.51) come «Update not available». Dato che ethtool -m funziona sull'X710 con lo stesso driver, l'autore ha chiesto se le letture EEPROM sono supportate sull'XXV710 in generale e qual è l'ultima versione NVM per esso.

Il supporto Intel ha chiesto le marcature sull'etichetta 4-in-1 dell'adattatore e l'output di ethtool -i per identificare la scheda.
Solo per chiarire, la scheda è a marchio FS.com, non Intel. FS mi ha detto che le schede XXV710 spedite con NVM 5.81(5.51) non possono essere flashate a firmware più recente, e hanno accettato un cambio RMA per unità spedite con NVM 6.01, che possono essere aggiornate a 7.1 e supportano la lettura EEPROM dei transceiver. Quello che mi infastidisce è che FS non ha mai dichiarato queste revisioni hardware differenti.
Ho anche chiesto a Intel di nominare modelli di NIC basate su XXV710 che accettano qualsiasi transceiver di terze parti compatibile MSA e riportano correttamente i dettagli EEPROM.
