FS.com XXV710 NIC पर ethtool -m fail होता है: "Module EEPROM memory read not supported" और NVM update नहीं होता
Ubuntu 18.04 (kernel 5.4.0, ethtool 5.3, i40e 2.8.20-k) पर poster ने FS.com से खरीदे 25G XXV710-based NICs इस्तेमाल किए (FS part XXV710AM2-F2, Intel XXV710 chipset)। Link और error-free wire-speed traffic ठीक काम कर रहे थे, पर sudo ethtool -m enp4s0f0 से transceiver का DMI data पढ़ने पर "Cannot get module EEPROM information: Invalid argument" error आया, और dmesg में "i40e 0000:04:00.0 enp4s0f0: Module EEPROM memory read not supported. Please update the NVM image." log हुआ। Intel का nvmupdate64e (NVMUpdate 1.34.17.7) चलाने पर एक genuine Intel X710 (DevId 1572) 7.16(7.10) पर update हो गया, पर NVM 5.81(5.51) वाले XXV710 (DevId 158B) को "Update not available" बताया। चूंकि ethtool -m उसी driver के साथ X710 पर काम करता है, poster ने पूछा कि क्या XXV710 पर EEPROM reads सिरे से supported हैं और इसके लिए latest NVM version क्या है।

Intel support ने card पहचानने के लिए adapter के 4-in-1 label पर मौजूद markings और ethtool -i का output मांगा।
बस साफ कर दूं, card FS.com-branded है, Intel नहीं। FS ने मुझे बताया कि NVM 5.81(5.51) के साथ shipped XXV710 cards को नए firmware पर flash नहीं किया जा सकता, और वो NVM 6.01 वाले units के लिए RMA exchange पर राज़ी हो गए, जिन्हें 7.1 पर update किया जा सकता है और जो transceiver EEPROM readout support करते हैं। जो बात मुझे खटकती है वो यह कि FS ने ये अलग-अलग hardware revisions कभी बताए ही नहीं।
मैंने Intel से यह भी पूछा कि वो XXV710-based NIC के उन models के नाम बताएं जो किसी भी MSA-compatible third-party transceiver को accept करते हैं और EEPROM details सही report करते हैं।
