Genuine Juniper SFPs show as unsupported right after boot on EX and MX platforms

Juniper-branded SFP modules were intermittently reported as unsupported or not supported in the chassis hardware output right after an EX or MX device booted. Rebooting the device or reseating the SFP made the module recognised again, which was frustrating in production. The poster wanted to know whether it was a configuration issue (for example SFP+ ports needing an explicit 1G speed setting) or a hardware/software bug.

  • Hardware: Juniper EX series, Juniper MX series
  • Transceivers: Juniper OEM SFP
  • Form factor: SFP, SFP+

Symptoms / messages:

show chassis hardware shows UNSUPPORTED
module recognised after reseat or reboot

Most likely a transient hardware/detection issue rather than configuration; move optics between ports and swap modules to see whether the fault follows the module or the port.

Collect show chassis hardware and show chassis pic output and open a JTAC case if it reproduces; possible causes are transient detection failure, SFP/SFP+ mismatch, or platform-specific support gaps.
