Dell SFP DAC disabled as unsupported on Catalyst 9500-48Y4C; Cisco SFP-H25G-CU3M works

The poster connected a Dell server to a Cisco Catalyst C9500-48Y4C (IOS XE 17.9.3) using a Dell L56SF018-SD-R 3 m DAC (DAC-SFP-3M). The cable is not in Cisco's optics compatibility matrix, and 'show interface status' shows port TwentyFiveGigE1/0/35 as err-disabled. Logging shows '%TRANSCEIVER-6-INSERTED: C1/0: iomd: transceiver module inserted in TwentyFiveGigE1/0/35' followed by '%TRANSCEIVER-3-NOT_SUPPORTED: C1/0: iomd: Detected for transceiver module in TwentyFiveGigE1/0/35, module disabled'. Enabling 'service unsupported-transceiver' globally and configuring 'fec cl108' made no difference. The poster asked whether any workaround exists for the Dell cable.

  • Hardware: Cisco Catalyst 9500-48Y4C (C9500-48Y4C), Dell server (unspecified)
  • Transceivers: Dell L56SF018-SD-R DAC-SFP-3M, SFP-H25G-CU3M
  • Form factor: SFP28, DAC

Symptoms / messages:

%TRANSCEIVER-3-NOT_SUPPORTED: C1/0: iomd: Detected for transceiver module in TwentyFiveGigE1/0/35, module disabled
%TRANSCEIVER-6-INSERTED: C1/0: iomd: transceiver module inserted in TwentyFiveGigE1/0/35
port err-disabled
service unsupported-transceiver has no effect

Use a DAC from the Cisco transceiver matrix for this platform, e.g. the 25G SFP28 cables SFP-H25G-CU1M, SFP-H25G-CU2M, SFP-H25G-CU3M or SFP-H25G-CU5M (supported since IOS XE 16.8.1).

The poster bought SFP-H25G-CU3M cables from the compatibility matrix and the link came up.

The respondent confirmed the Dell L56SF018-SD-R cable should be treated as incompatible with the C9500-48Y4C.
