Flashing CWDM SFP modules: looking for EEPROM images so Cisco switches identify them correctly

Asked Active Viewed 86

The thread starter had a set of Cisco EEPROM images (SX, LH, ZX types) but no CWDM images and wanted CWDM SFP modules to show up on Cisco switches as CWDM/WDM optics rather than being misidentified as SX or LX. Without a correct image the switch either reported the module as unsupported or forced the use of service unsupported-transceiver and disabling gbic-invalid errdisable detection. The thread grew into a long-running exchange (dozens of pages, more than a thousand posts) where people asked for images for specific Cisco part numbers such as GLC-BX-D/U and GLC-FE-100BX-D/U, discussed which programmers could edit the fields, and shared dumps.

  • Hardware: Cisco Catalyst switches
  • Transceivers: CWDM SFP 1550 nm, GLC-SX-MM, GLC-LH-SM, GLC-ZX-SM, GLC-BX-D, GLC-BX-U, GLC-FE-100BX-D, GLC-FE-100BX-U
  • Form factor: SFP, GBIC

Symptoms / messages:

module identified as wrong type (LX instead of CWDM)
unsupported transceiver
errdisable gbic-invalid

Accepted answer

Members shared CWDM EEPROM dumps (text files) that make the module identify as a CWDM-1550 SFP; TX, SX, LH and ZX dumps were posted for other models.

A programmer with an editor lets you change serial number and description fields and recalculate checksums, but the tools were bought from suppliers and details were not shared.

Requests for GLC-BX-D/U and 100BX images stayed open on the first pages of the thread.
