Checking whether GLC-T modules with unusual serial numbers are genuine Cisco

A friend of the poster bought several GLC-T copper SFPs sold as original Cisco, but their serial numbers had an unfamiliar format (00000MTC1719055H, 00000MTC171903XL and similar). 'show interface ethernet 1/45 transceiver sprom' on a Cisco Nexus 5596 lists the module as SFP-1000BASE-T, vendor name CISCO-METHODE, part number SP7041_Rev_F, revision F, Vendor OUI 0x000000, Diagnostic Monitoring Type 0x00, with both check codes reported OK (Check Code ID 0x5a, Check Code EXT 0x2b). The poster asked how to tell genuine from counterfeit and requested sprom output from known-good GLC-T modules. Later readers asked how to verify FNS-prefixed serials and eBay-sourced GLC-SX-MMD modules for a WS-C2960X-24TS-LL.

Serial numbers can be verified in Cisco's coverage/trade tool (GCTA), which requires a Cisco login and shows the part ID, bundle information and country of manufacture.
