Intel X722でethtool -mが失敗: Module EEPROM memory read not supported, please update the NVM image

Intel S2600WFTボード上のX722 10GbE SFP+コントローラ(rev 09, NVM 3.31 0x80000d31 1.1767.0)は、ethtool -mに対してCannot get module EEPROM information: Invalid argumentで拒否し、カーネルはModule EEPROM memory read not supported. Please update the NVM image.とログに残した。カーネル4.19.65+out-of-treeのi40e 2.9.21、in-treeのi40e 2.3.2-k、カーネル5.2.5+i40e 2.8.20-kのいずれでも挙動は同じで、同じSFP+モジュールとドライバはX710では問題なく動いた。e1000-devel MLでのフォローアップによれば、必要なNVMはX710と同じ6.01で、X722側は3.31。しかしNVM更新ツール4.00はconfiguration mismatchesとflash verification errorsで失敗し、更新を試みた後もこの機能は使えないままだった。
