HPE 5510 HI corrupts JD118B/JD119B SFP EEPROM on power reboot: CHKSUM_ERR and Transceiver type not supported

On an HPE 5510 24G SFP 4SFP+ HI (JH149A, Comware 7.1.045 R1111P01) genuine JD119B and JD118B 1G SFPs were accepted at first (OPTMOD/4/MODULE_IN: The transceiver is 1000_BASE_SX_SFP), but after a cold power reboot the same modules were reported as UNKNOWN_SFP_PLUS with OPTMOD/5/CHKSUM_ERR: Transceiver information checksum error! and OPTMOD/3/TYPE_ERR: Transceiver type not supported!. Reseating and rebooting did not help; the affected modules still worked in an HP 1920 but with a checksum warning, while brand-new modules of the same type worked in the 5510 until the next power cycle.

  • Hardware: HPE 5510 24G SFP 4SFP+ HI JH149A, HP 1920
  • Transceivers: HPE JD119B, HPE JD118B
  • Form factor: SFP

Symptoms / messages:

OPTMOD/5/CHKSUM_ERR: Transceiver information checksum error!
OPTMOD/3/TYPE_ERR: Transceiver type not supported!
The transceiver is UNKNOWN_SFP_PLUS

Release notes list bug 201607220132 (fixed in R1121P01): after power-off and reboot the switch modifies information in transceiver modules that are not write-protected, leaving them damaged. Upgrade to R1122P02 or later to stop further damage; already-corrupted modules may be unrecoverable.

Collect display transceiver interface / alarm / diagnosis output to characterise the modules; the poster planned the firmware upgrade.
