Genuine Aruba J9151E SFP+ shows Unsupported Transceiver (SelfTest Err#128000) on 2930F switches

On Aruba 2930F switches (JL255A) the poster installed new J9151E 10G SFP+ transceivers (part 1990-4727) that the transceiver guide lists as supported, but every unit was reported as Unsupported Transceiver (SelfTest Err#128000) and show tech transceivers showed ?? for type and serial. J9281D DACs in the same switches worked. Four switches and four transceivers were cross-tested, firmware WC.16.10.009 and WC.16.10.0016 were tried, switches were rebooted, modules reseated and allow-unsupported-transceiver was enabled, all without success. A later poster hit the same with more than 100 units.

Older firmware does not know the E-revision transceivers, so the first advice was to update to the latest release; it did not help here.
HPE support ultimately replaced the whole batch of 14 transceivers as defective; no firmware fix was identified.
