Aruba 2930F VSF stack refuses an HPE DAC that works on normal ports

Two Aruba 2930F switches (JL256A, firmware 16.05.0003) were to be stacked with VSF over an HPE DAC. With allow-unsupported-transceiver enabled the DAC passed traffic on normal ports, but as soon as the ports were made VSF member links the stack would not form. Replacing the DAC with supported 10G SFP+ transceivers and fibre made VSF work immediately. The poster asked why the DAC was rejected only for VSF.

  • Hardware: Aruba 2930F JL256A
  • Transceivers: HPE X242 DAC, 10G SFP+ SR modules
  • Form factor: SFP+, DAC

Symptoms / messages:

VSF link does not come up over DAC
same DAC works on non-VSF ports

VSF links intentionally do not accept unsupported transceivers or DACs for stability reasons.

An HPE employee logged it as a possible bug since the X242 DAC is supported, recommended upgrading to WS.16.05.0004, and noted that 2930F models without a PHY cannot support 10G LRM optics or 7 m DACs.
