Aruba 6300: DACs longer than 3 m and whether a 25G SFP28 DAC negotiates down to 10G

The poster needed to connect stacked Aruba 6300F (JL665A) switches to a 6300M core (JL658A) at 10 Gbps over more than 3 m. J9283D 3 m DACs worked for short runs and the older 3810/2930 platforms supported a 7 m J9285D cable, but that cable is not listed for the 6300. The question was whether the 5 m 25G SFP28 DAC (JL489A) would auto-negotiate to 10G in an SFP+ port, or whether J9150D optics with OM4 fibre were the only option.

  • Hardware: Aruba 6300F JL665A, Aruba 6300M JL658A
  • Transceivers: Aruba J9283D DAC 3 m, Aruba J9285D DAC 7 m, Aruba JL489A SFP28 DAC 5 m, Aruba J9150D
  • Form factor: SFP+, SFP28, DAC

Symptoms / messages:

no supported DAC over 3 m
doubt about 25G DAC in 10G port

Accepted answer

An HPE employee stated that DACs do not auto-negotiate, so for longer runs at 10G the only option is transceivers with fibre.
