Non-Juniper SFP+/SFP modules not detected in any port of an EX2300-24P but fine in an EX2300-48P

While staging an EX2300-48P and an EX2300-24P (both Junos 18.2R3-S5.3) with non-Juniper SFP+/SFP modules, the 48-port switch recognised the transceivers and created interfaces, but the 24-port switch showed nothing in any of its four uplink ports; show chassis hardware listed PIC 1 as 4x10G SFP/SFP+ with no transceiver entries. Swapping modules between switches did not change the behaviour, and the logs only showed STP topology changes when modules were reinserted.

  • Hardware: Juniper EX2300-48P, Juniper EX2300-24P
  • Transceivers: third-party SFP+, third-party SFP
  • Form factor: SFP, SFP+

Symptoms / messages:

no transceiver listed in show chassis hardware
interface not created

Root cause was a cabling mistake: the modules were being inserted into a third switch of the test stack, not the 24P; once placed in the correct unit the module came up immediately.

Verify identical Junos versions and check /var/log/messages and /var/log/chassisd for detection errors.
