How to check whether an old 8 Gb FC HBA and its SFP are compatible with a ProLiant DL380 Gen10

The poster wanted to verify whether an HPE StorageWorks 81B 8 Gb Fibre Channel HBA (AP769-60001) fitted with an AJ716B SFP could be used in an HPE ProLiant DL380 Gen10 server (P02464-B21) and asked for a tool where part numbers can be entered to get a compatibility verdict. No error had occurred yet; the concern was about supported combinations of server, HBA and transceiver.

  • Hardware: HPE ProLiant DL380 Gen10, HPE StorageWorks 81B 8Gb FC HBA (AP769B)
  • Transceivers: HPE AJ716B 8Gb SW FC SFP+
  • Form factor: SFP+

Symptoms / messages:

unsupported configuration
legacy HBA on new server

The DL380 Gen10 QuickSpecs do not list the ten-year-old 8 Gb HBA; Gen10 only supports selected 16/32 Gb FC HBAs, so the combination is unsupported even if it might work electrically.

Use the HPE Server Options Compatibility Tool; the AJ716B SFP itself is supported on the 81B HBA and on Brocade 8Gb SAN switches for BladeSystem.
